4 Tips to Brighten Areas with Low Light
Most houses have a room that’s a bit dark. Maybe it doesn’t have windows or it overlooks a small patio. If your house has areas with low light, here are some tips to help you brighten them up.
You will see below that you don’t have to only use light bulbs or other types of artificial light to brighten a room. Choice of decoration can give the room a brighter feel even if it has very little natural light. Keep reading to see how.
1. Artificial lighting
Artificial lighting is essential to brighten areas with low light. Although it’s the most important element, we will later explore how decoration also influences this feeling of brightness.
To illuminate a dark area, it’s best to place light sources throughout the entire room. For that reason, one of the best options is spotlights. These distribute light throughout the room.
Another option is to install a central lighting system and then add other elements such as floor lamps. Doing this can create different moods with the lighting.
It’s best to install white light bulbs in areas with little natural light. They offer a greater amount of light and therefore give a greater feeling of space and luminosity.
2. Choose light colors
Light colors bring brightness and spaciousness to a room. That’s why low-light areas should be filled with these colors. It’s important that the walls are white or a pastel color. If the room is painted in darker colors, it will look smaller and darker.
The same thing goes for the color of the furniture. Choose white or pastels so there appears to be more light. Also, a space decorated in lighter colors produces a pleasant and peaceful atmosphere. This look is timeless and you’ll tire of it.
We’re not saying that everything in the room should be white. Obviously, you can include elements that have a darker color. But they should be accessories or small furniture.
For example, sofa pillows, a small table or a piece of art can be darker. On the other hand, the curtains must be light enough to allow light to pass through. Otherwise, you decrease the light in the room even more.
3. Use mirrors to brighten areas with low light
Find a place where natural light comes in. Install a mirror there to reflect that light. This makes it seem as if there is more light in the room. Large mirrors work well in dark rooms because they add a feeling of spaciousness.
If the frame of the mirror is a light color it will enhance the feeling of light even more. Depending on your plans for the room, you could choose a mirror that has small light bulbs in the frame or uses light bars.
4. Glass doors
Another way to brighten areas with low light is to install glass doors. They can be completely transparent or just have glass in the center at the top. This way light from another room will filter into the darker room.
At the same time, the connecting of the two rooms produces a sense of spaciousness and lessens the dark atmosphere. It creates a window effect and makes it feel like there is another window in the room.
If you can’t use a glass door because the dark room is your bedroom or bathroom, there is a solution. You can install translucent glass. It allows the light in but also preserves your privacy. You can also put up a small curtain so that you can’t see through the glass.
If you opt for the curtain, choose a light color. Otherwise, the light will not filter through, thereby defeating the purpose of having a glass door.
