In today’s post, we’re going to look at clay bricks. Solid clay bricks are a very common construction material.

While we’ve mentioned bricks in previous posts, we only really talked about them as a decorative element, some examples being a brick wall or a bookcase. However, in today’s post, we want to focus on bricks as a construction element.

To begin, clay bricks are quite economical and easy to obtain. In fact, you can find them all over the internet. Here’s an example. They also are great heat insulators, which is an important thing to think about in construction as it can mean big savings in energy.

Clay bricks can be used in various projects including rustic home exteriors, pavements, dividing walls, septic tanks, and inspection chambers. A quick look on the internet will show you that many clay brick companies are based in South America.

Before diving into the material itself, we first want to briefly go over general construction uses for bricks. You probably already know that they’re a material that has existed in construction for thousands of years.

They normally have a rectangular shape and are baked at high temperatures. Any alternation in their making process can have consequences for their final results.

Bricks come in different varieties. For example, some have holes for mortar or concrete, making for an even stronger foundation. If you’re interested in using bricks, you might also consider using cement for decor. Cement can really look quite lovely. It’s the same with micro-cement— you’ll love the results.

The resistance that clay bricks offer is one of their strongest advantages: they withstand external factors thanks to their absorption, compression and flexion capacities. They’re also quite dense.

Bricks are common construction materials for buildings and homes. Logically, buildings and homes have to carry quite a bit of weight making high-quality construction materials crucial to ensure the safety of everyone inside.

Various studies prove that bricks are great construction materials, having tested them with compression and pressure to measure their capacity. You can even check out a study on the resistance of the bricks used in the Spanish city of Ocaña to compression by Spanish Nelson Afanador García.

But, of course, not all bricks are the same: their characteristics depend on the quality of their clay, fabrication process and baking temperature among other factors.

The foundation of any construction is crucial, but it becomes even more so in areas where earthquakes are common. Construction materials should be of high quality and capable of absorbing the movement that results from an earthquake. Uniform materials and general unity among them is fundamental to withstand such violent movements.

The resistance of construction materials is a basic need for any structure and clay bricks are a wonderful example.
