Moving house is always a long and tiring process. In this article, we want to give you some advice to make it a little easier.

The truth is that moving house is never a simple matter. It can even get overwhelming at times. This is because of the huge amount of possessions we collect over the years, not to mention the furniture, bedding…

In the end, you might even start to think that it’s simply impossible. Plus, you inevitably have deadlines to meet, especially as you have to hire the removal service.

With so many things to think about, it’s important to try to maintain a sense of order, both before and after moving. Next, we’ll give you a few ideas to help make moving house just that little bit simpler.

Choosing smaller boxes makes moving house much more manageable.

1. Have a big clean out before you pack

This is fundamental. Otherwise, you’ll be bringing a whole load of papers, old clothes and accessories with you that you never even use. In the same way that people do when they change from their winter to their summer wardrobes, you can take this opportunity to work out which clothes you actually wear, and which you should donate or recycle.

So, don’t put off cleaning, as all you’ll do is waste time and space. It’s much better to do it early on, rather than doing it after you’ve moved into your new home.

For example, we often accumulate piles and piles of paper. So, take the time to reorganize it in a file or organizer, so that you know exactly where to find everything you need.

2. Create kits with the basic essentials for moving house

We would recommend that you create two kits. The first should contain all the materials and tools you’ll need most during the move: scissors, packing tape, newspaper to wrap things in… Keep this kit on hand at all times.

And the second kit should contain all the personal items you’ll need while going back and forth between the two houses. It should include pajamas, a small first aid kit, a change of clothes, toiletries, a towel, bedding… Put all in one box or sports bag so that you can transport it around easily and take it with you whenever you need it.

3. Choose the right boxes

It’s important to know how to organize all your belongings. It’s easy to make silly mistakes which can make the whole process of moving house a lot more difficult than it needs to be.

For example, we often choose boxes that are too big for us to move, or they end up breaking because of the weight of their contents. This happens a lot with books. It’s best to use smaller boxes, and have more of them. And if they don’t have handles, you can make them yourself with scissors. This will make them much easier to lift.

You can also make use of any suitcases that you have in the house, and use them to keep clothes, shoes, bedding or towels. This way, you can really make the most of them. After all, you’ll need to take the suitcases to the new house with you anyway.

As for your more valuable possessions, you should choose a small box which is easy to recognize so that you can’t lose track of it.

Create a kit with moving day essentials like tape and bubble wrap.

4. Carefully wrap any fragile items

There are lots of different ways to do this, from wrapping mugs in newspaper or bubble wrap to filling your cardboard boxes with Styrofoam to keep vases and other fragile objects safe. This is the best way to make sure your crockery arrives at your new home in one piece.

However, in the same way, as you can use your suitcases for packing, you can also use things you already have in the house. In this case, you can use your towels and rugs to wrap some of your larger and heavier items.

5. Mark boxes clearly

Being able to identify the contents of each box is essential for making moving house easier. Firstly, because it means that you can take each box straight to the relevant room instead of just leaving them lying in the entrance hall.

It’s important to group items of the same type together to make it easier to get things organized later on. And if the box contains something fragile, it’s important to put a note on the box, so that nothing gets broken en route. You can write straight onto the box, or make your own labels.

So, in this long and laborious process, it’s important to stay organized. This will make unpacking and setting up at your new house much easier. As well as good organization, remember that a bit of patience will make this task a lot less stressful.
