If you want to keep your flower arrangements almost perfect for longer and decorate your table centerpiece or the hall with them, we’ll give you the infallible tricks to preserve them. Take note!

Clean the flowers

The most important trick to preserve your flower arrangement is to remove the wrapping paper, cut the stems diagonally and clean the flowers. When you remove excess leaves and branches, you allow the plant to focus and direct the nutrients it takes from the water to keep the flower alive.

Transfer the arrangement to a vase of water

Once the stems are clean, cut them diagonally and transfer the arrangement to a vase of water. Many people keep the bouquet as it’s received, but this causes the flowers to wither faster.

Although it’s a valid and obvious point, it’s necessary to bear in mind that water will allow them to stay alive for many more days to come. Just avoid drowning the flowers and make sure that the water level doesn’t exceed ten centimeters.

Tricks to preserve flower arrangements: choose a good location

Some figure

The location of your flower arrangement is important, the brighter it is during the day and the cooler it is at nightfall, the longer the shelf life will be. Avoid (at all costs) the sun’s rays hitting your flowers directly, otherwise, it’ll only make them wither much faster.

Avoid placing flower arrangements near fruits or vegetables. This is because the gases that the food emits during its decomposition process can damage the flowers.

Change the water and watch the temperature

The ideal way to preserve your flower arrangements is to change the water every two days, to prevent the flowers from drying out. When you notice that the stems become dry, cut it a centimeter or more, depending on the affectation. Be careful with the water temperature too, although most plants receive warm water well, those with roots in the form of a bulb and roses prefer cold water.

Other plants such as orchids don’t require much care, but it’s necessary to water them with warm water to keep them vivid. Now, others such as hydrangeas require cold water baths to keep them awake and looking much more colorful.

Tricks to preserve flower arrangements: feed them

When the flowers have been cut from their mother plant they require nutrients to stay alive for longer. In this case, you can use some home remedies such as:

  • A mixture of a tablespoon of sugar and a teaspoon of bleach in two liters of water–to kill bacteria and feed them.
  • Crush two tablets of acetylsalicylic acid in a cup of warm water, let it cool and fill the vase with water. Studies indicate that this acid helps plants to grow better.
  • Add two tablespoons of vinegar or a couple of drops of vodka to the water in the vase to preserve the arrangement for longer.
  • Choose one of these home remedies and put it in a spray bottle so you can spray the petals, especially on hot days.
  • Flowers prefer silver vases, as this material has an antibacterial effect that’s beneficial for flowers.
