Some figure

There is a tendency to confuse Feng Shui with the oriental decorative styles of China or Japan. However, it has nothing to do with them.

So, if you don’t like those styles don’t worry. You can apply Feng Shui to any decorative style. Obviously Eastern cultures are more linked to this philosophy but it’s not exclusive to the East. In this article, you will learn what Feng Shui is and how to implement it’s principles into your home decor.

What is Feng Shui?

To cut a long story short, Feng Shui is an ancient philosophy that focuses on the flow of energy in people’s lives either through meditation or in this case, decoration.

According to this philosophy, each room of a house has its own energy. This energy depends on how the room is used. For example, a child’s room will not have the same energy as the kitchen or the office.

The main objective of Feng Shui is that the environment is positive and in tune with the elements. If everything is order, it can improve your life in certain ways.

The three basic principles of Feng Shui are: space, order and cleanliness.

  1. Space: Take everything out of your house that is old so that you have room for the new things that will come. If your old things are in good condition, you can donate them.
  2. Order:  Everything has its place in a home. Make sure everything is in its proper place. There is harmony in order.
  3. Cleanliness:  Not that cleaning needs to be an obsession but your house should be clean. Hygiene is essential in rooms like the kitchen and the bathroom.

In addition, Feng Shui is a philosophy that adds simplicity to the space. It also asks you to reconsider what is really important and necessary in your home.

Other Feng Shui principles

Aside from the three main principles, there are other secondary principles that stem from them.

The light

In Feng Shui, light is essential and is considered as a source of energy. For this reason, you should try to enhance natural light with large windows. You can do things to add luminosity to the room such as painting it a light color. Also, avoid heavy curtains as they keep light out.

Water

According to this ancient philosophy, water attracts prosperity. Decor that follows Feng Shui always has a water feature.

For example, fountains, large or small are featured in the garden or inside the home. There are also pictures of water, fish tanks or large vases of water present.

Water is so important in Feng Shui that people who practice it close the toilet lid before flushing so that the energy does not escape.

Fire

Fire is very important in this tradition. It is the element that purifies and expels negative energy. For that reason, the use of candles is quite common.

Curves

The philosophy favors decorations with curves. For example, a coffee table with rounded edges is better than a rectangular one.

Also, the dining table should be round to foster communication between the those present. Using curved furniture is also a matter of safety if you have small children.
