Pictures can complement the style of your home by adding the landscapes and photos that inspire us the most. Sometimes, they can go unnoticed. But they can be the first thing you see when you walk into a room.

To make your picture stand out, you’ll need to highlight certain features, which we’ll discuss next.

Positioning

One important factor to keep in mind when choosing pictures for your house is where you’re going to hang them.

You don’t just need to think about the space. The furniture, the wall and the lighting are also very important elements to keep in mind. That way, you can weigh up all the different options and choose the one that best suits the space.

Often, pictures help to highlight areas of the room we like and want to show off. Conversely, they can also help to hide things we don’t like and don’t want to draw attention to.

It’s clear that the first things you need to ask yourself before putting up a picture are:

  • The effect you’re trying to achieve.
  • The wall you want to emphasize.
  • What you want to highlight in the room.

The size of the picture

The type of picture you choose will depend on the size of the wall and the height of the ceiling.

If your house is slightly on the small side, putting up a matching set of small pictures is a great option. These can be used instead of a single large frame, which would take up most of the wall space.

Get a matching set of frames to really highlight your wall.

These collages of pictures allow you to play with different colors, shapes and styles. However, you have to think about the pictures you want to include. If they’re large, you’ll have to put up fewer of them, or they’ll end up taking over the entire wall.

On the other hand, if you have high ceilings, make the most of them by putting up a large picture. You could also make a collage of pictures, choosing large ones to make the room seem more spacious.

Types of pictures

Obviously, if you’ve not got much in the way of decoration on your walls, you can give a bit more thought to the style, size and shape of the frame you want to buy.

However, if there’s already a clear sense of style to your room, choose pictures with the same colors you’ve used in your house. That way, they’ll match, and won’t spoil the sense of harmony.

If you don’t want to choose pictures with any one particular style, you can choose artistic photos, watercolors – which are really popular at the moment – engravings, quotations, geometric paintings and so on. You could even frame a photo that you find particularly inspiring, or take one yourself. That way you can give a personal and original touch to your room.

Choosing the frame

As well as thinking about the picture itself, the frame you choose will have a huge impact on the overall look.

Frames come in various different materials, colors, thicknesses and sizes. Plus, you’ll need to match all those things with the picture you want to frame.

Picture frames come in all different shapes, sizes and materials.

If you want to choose a simpler, more minimalist style, choose a narrower frame with subtler colors. That way, it won’t detract any attention away from the picture itself.

On the other hand, if you really want to emphasize the picture, choose a more elaborate frame. That way, it will attract the eye of anyone who passes by.

Choosing pictures for the living room

The living room is a great place to play around with different combinations of pictures. It all depends on the wall you want to display them on.

One wall with a lot of potential is the wall behind the sofa. A great option is to put up a triptych, making sure they’re all in line with one another. Alternatively, you can play around with different heights and sizes. Hang the widest picture to one side, away from the back of the sofa, and make sure they’re all an equal distance away from one another.

The wall behind the sofa is a great place to hang pictures.

If you’ve got high ceilings and low sofas, put two or three rows of pictures high up on the wall. Matching sets of laminates with narrow frames are right on trend.

As you can see, choosing the perfect picture to match your house is no easy task. Are you bold enough to try out one of our suggestions?
