7 Home Decor Rules
You don’t have to be an interior design expert to create a perfect decor for your home. All you really need is to learn the basic rules for good decor.
In our post today, we have some essential points for decorating your home or a particular room. You won’t believe all the things you can do with just a few decor tricks.
The golden rules of decor
Call them the “Seven Commandments of Decor” or whatever you want. These decor pointers will help you decorate the home of your dreams. They won’t call for a big investment and could showcase your artistic or crafty side. They’ll help you nail you a home decor that’s on par with a decor magazine.
1. Define the purpose of each room
Rooms like kitchens or bathrooms have a clearer purpose but others not so much. Before you decorate or remodel your home, clarify the purpose of every room.
Think about your lifestyle, activities, habits, schedule, etc. Take the time to think about which spaces you can merge and add in the necessary furniture pieces to make those changes. By planning ahead, you can prevent your guest room from turning into your dressing room or save your kitchen cupboards from homing your gardening tools.
2. Conserve the architecture of your home
After moving into a new home, you might want to tear down anything that you don’t like or consider excessive. But sometimes, it just might not go as you planned. The first decor rule is using what we have and if necessary, remodeling, but never eliminating.

As big as your windows might seem to be, they’ll never be big enough. Windows need to let in plenty of natural light, even on cloudy or rainy days.
As for artificial lighting, avoid overusing light fixtures (unless you want your room to look like an operating room). But make sure you have enough to light up your home sufficiently. Try to create a good balance between natural and artificial light by using light colors on your walls, curtains and decor accessories.
4. Different rooms, different decors
First, think about what you want your room to look like. Once you finish that room’s decor, move on to the next room, to the kitchen, or your yard. By working on one space at a time, you’ll be able to give each space the attention that it needs.
We suggest starting with the room where you’ll spend the most time or the one you consider most important in your home. Make a list to prioritize your rooms and make sure that the most important or biggest ones have corresponding decor.
5. Get inspired
While you don’t have to spend all day looking at home decor magazines or blogs, do spend a few hours a week looking for inspiration to visualize how you want your home to be.
There are great ideas out there and you can adapt them to your preferences and budget. Your own vision will result from comparing different decor ideas and using your favorite parts about them. And getting inspired is fun!
6. Details matter
As the old saying goes, the devil is in the detail. Beauty lies in anything that you can add to a setting to make it 100% yours.
Your decor accessories represent you and who doesn’t like turning a place into a space of their own? Without the details, a room could be anyone’s, and in the world of decor, that’s a catastrophe.
7. Look for balance
Looking for balance is another golden rule in decor. You can achieve it in many ways; for example, you can find balance through symmetrical furniture arrangement or hanging pictures on walls. Or, you can create a focal point to center your decor around in each room.
