3 Kinds of Arches for the Construction of Interiors

The infrastructure of a building is not only composed of walls, floors, and ceilings; other elements offer an alternative aesthetic meaning; let’s find out about three kinds of arches for interior structures.

It’s true that, generally, houses don’t include structures of this type. A house is usually composed of the building elements that are essential to support the structure, most notably beams and columns.

However, other components are interesting and can contribute positively to the whole aesthetic. If you want to arouse the curiosity of your guests or give your spaces more personality, then you have the chance to create a different atmosphere.

1. Segmental arches – slenderness and width

One of the kinds of arches you’ll commonly see in houses are segmental arches, notable for their dimensions and width. In their design, the curve closes earlier than expected as it meets the point of convergence with the column or support.

The basic idea has its origin with the Romans. They decided to use it in their buildings and differentiate themselves from the Greeks, who used systems with architraves.

These produce a particular optical effect as if the arch itself were suddenly cut off. They’re a basic structural component that closes the upper part of the space.

Segmental arches can be implemented in different parts of the house. In the hallway, in the dining room, or the living room. They convey elegance and the space takes on new meaning.

A way to complement and unite architecture with decoration.

2. The round arch – classicism for the home

The round arch is part of the classical history of interior design. It’s not overly complex in its appearance, nor does it distinguish itself; in fact, it’s a conservative and conventional system. Let’s see how it can work in the home.

  • In the same way as segmental arches, round arches also add a certain distinction to the whole. In the hallway or living room, they tie everything together and their appearance in the house can be surprising. They’re more common in public places or for monuments.
  • In a space with two different heights, they can be useful to set off the central area between the two parts.
  • In the same way, a round arch above the entrance to a house will adorn and affirm the importance of the place. They follow a schematic similar to ancient palaces.
  • Another of their qualities is sophistication. There’s no doubt that, depending on their form and layout, they’re very attractive and eye-catching and enhance the surroundings.

3. The basket-handle arch – another way to decorate interiors

When it comes to arches that enhance the overall aesthetics, the basket-handle arch is one of the most interesting. It has curved edges and joins the side column or support gradually. Of all interior structures, this is one of the most elegant examples.

The basket-handle arch was already highly valued in the Renaissance period. They were especially used in doorways; they can also look great above the entrance of a house.

However, there’s also another option – installing them in shared areas such as the living room to divide spaces; up to three in a row can link on slender columns.

It’s time to enhance the image of the interior of your house.

Why decorate with arches?

Though arches are not strictly ornamental objects or furniture, they can still contribute and stand out by themselves as part of the interior structures. They can be a great idea to energize the environment.

In this sense, what can they contribute? If you think about it you’ll realize the positive sensations they transmit. Also, they break with the tendency to use only beams and columns, when in fact there’s another option.
