• The designs aren’t too complex nor bizarre. More often than not, they feature simple compositions that use different motifs together. But you can always differentiate the different components of the overall design.
• But some damask designs often contain other specific shapes as well: stars, plants or interconnected shapes that lead to a more complex composition. These sorts of designs denote an interest in alternative decor styles.

Chromatic combinations

Damascus patterns don’t only feature a set of geometrical and lineal motifs; colors also play a starring role in creating contrast and enhancing the design.

While you can find all kinds of designs, the most popular tend to be ones that feature white backgrounds. The white helps better define the designs. Similarly, light designs on dark backgrounds are very popular as well.

Plant motifs are also very common in these types of rugs. As a result, it’s no wonder that green is common in many rugs that need a color to offset the darker colors.
