Garden tools: the basics

You just need the basics if you have a small-medium garden. There’s no point getting huge machines if your garden doesn’t need it. All you really need are basic tools for simple tasks, like planting, re-planting, digging, trimming, etc. Here are some of the garden tools you’ll want:

  • Gardening gloves
  • Watering can
  • Garden shovel
  • Rake
  • Pruning shears

You need to wear gardening gloves to protect your hands. They’re easy to find at hardware stores and plant nurseries. They’ll protect your hands from dirtiness, blisters, cuts, and toxic things like pesticides. Always be safe and use them whenever you’re gardening.

Watering can

A watering can is a must-have for a small garden, partly because you don’t have too much area to water. One watering can will be plenty for keeping all your plants and flowers properly watered.

They also come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Choose the one you like best for watering your garden!

Garden shovels are super practical tools to have in any garden. You can use them to dig up soil, plant, and re-plant anything you want to. Make sure yours has a pointed end because that makes it much easier to dig.

You don’t have a full gardening set if you don’t have a rake. You can get smaller, hand-held ones that look like forks or the more traditional ones the size of brooms. They’re both good for gardening tasks, it just depends on how big the project you’re doing is.

You can use the bigger rake for moving soil around and getting the surface flat before you plant grass, for example. You can use the smaller one for the same things, but in smaller sections of your garden, like flower beds.

Pruning shears

Lastly, pruning shears are also good to have in your basic garden tool set. You could either get the kind with wooden handles that you have to use with two hands or the hand-held kind.

Two-handed pruning shears are better for pruning and trimming medium-sized bushes. The smaller ones are better for thin branches and flowers.

Garden tools for bigger gardens
