If you’re thinking about renovating your house, it’s important to plan the entire operation down to the last detail. This is especially true when it comes to renovating a space as important as the bathroom.

Bathrooms are an essential part of any home, and a renovation can have a huge impact on your daily routine. To keep this impact to a minimum, we want to show you some of the most common mistakes to avoid when renovating your bathroom.

1. Renovating your bathroom – the search for practical decor

When it comes to bathrooms, interior decor trends are constantly evolving. If you’re thinking about replacing all your bathroom furniture, you’ll need to keep these 3 essential characteristics in mind:

  • Comfort
  • Accessibility
  • Functionality

What we mean is that you shouldn’t choose your furniture just because it’s in fashion or because you think it looks good. The most important thing is to make sure it meets your needs. Bathrooms are spaces we use daily, so they must be fully furnished with everything right on-hand when you need it.

2. Safety first

Lighting plays a pivotal role in bathrooms. But what’s even more important is where you place your light bulbs. As everybody knows, water and electricity don’t mix, so the two must never come into contact.

The placement of the light bulbs must be carefully planned, keeping them as far away from the water as possible. Remember, you and your family’s safety should always come first. Only then you can think about aesthetics.

3. Renovating your bathroom – accessibility

Creating an accessible bathroom means making sure everything is as comfortable as possible. Showers are a great example.

If you previously only had a bathtub, we recommend taking the opportunity to swop it for a floor-level shower tray. This makes it super easy to get in and out with no obstacles.

This simple change can make a world of difference later. Firstly, because they can help make bathrooms feel more spacious. And secondly, because we often lose mobility as we get older, making even the simplest tasks (such as climbing in and out of the tub) more difficult.

4. Choosing the right materials

When it comes to renovating your bathroom, one of the most important decisions you’ll have to make is choosing the right materials for your space. There’s a huge range of options on offer, but you shouldn’t let yourself be swayed by passing trends or mere aesthetics.

The most important thing is to choose humidity-resistant materials. At the moment, wallpaper is a popular choice for bathroom walls. However, keep in mind that however moisture-resistant it may be, wallpaper will inevitably deteriorate over time. As such, we advise against using it in the dampest areas of the bathroom, such as around the shower.

Another material we’re seeing a lot of in bathrooms at the moment is wood. While it will undoubtedly bring a sense of warmth to the room, you must take special care when choosing the type of wood you want to use. Not all are suitable for bathrooms, as they don’t have the same level of resistance to moisture.

Vinyl flooring is a great option for modern bathrooms. You can even place it on top of your original flooring, greatly reducing your workload. Plus, it’s also highly resistant to moisture. What more could you possibly want?

5. Renovating your bathroom – choosing the right sink

The sink is one of the most important elements in any bathroom, along with the shower and the toilet. Needless to say, you need to think carefully about which will best suit your needs. Styles and designs have evolved greatly over the years, allowing us to create all kinds of striking bathroom interiors.

However, some of the shapes on the market at the moment aren’t all that practical for day-to-day life. Choose the one you’ll feel comfortable with so that you don’t regret it in the long run.
