Oxygenating your home interiors is crucial and in order to do that, you need to use natural resources. Bonsai trees are original plants that stand out from normal houseplants. They can create special decor.

While the majority of bonsai trees are outdoor species, some can live indoors. These can even handle heating or temperature changes with no problem. They can live in the moderate temperatures of a home.

In a room like a living room, a bonsai tree can add a delicate touch as well as an appreciation for the little things. It has that effect thanks to its minimalist conception, reduced size and alternative character. It’s certainly not the typical decor.

On that note, bonsai trees can be an interesting element for home decor. They are elegant and defined, so much so that they can become a visual focal point. Use different kinds of bonsai trees in one space to create a small, unique botanical bonsai garden.

Indoor bonsai tree species

There are many different bonsai tree species out there. If you’re not sure which one to choose, try these examples:

  • Ficus retusa: these species originates from China and Southeast Asia. They’re generally quite small and live well in any indoor setting, including in the water (with sufficient watering). But be careful with sudden changes in temperature. The ficus retusa species requires plenty of indirect sunlight.
  • Olea europea: the next species is an olive tree. It’s great for indoor settings and can also thrive outdoors as well. However, make sure to keep it safe from cold temperatures. These trees can vary in size, growing between 20 to 50 centimeters. Try to keep them close to a window for direct sunlight during colder seasons.
  • Pistacia lentiscus: Pistacia lentiscus needs plenty of light (place it next to a window) and temperatures that don’t dip below 20º C. Water them generously during summer and less in winter. These plants can grow up to 25 centimeters tall.
  • Punica granatum: this famous pomegranate tree is perfect for the outdoors during hot seasons. In the winter, however, they’re better off indoors. They can grow up to 35 centimeters tall. Water them weekly. This species blooms beautifully, especially at the beginning of autumn.

Other species worth considering

These next two species differ from the prior examples and also offer something special:

  • Ficus benjamina: you can find this species at any plant nursery. The amount of leaves that it grows makes it stand out from the rest. Try to keep it next to a window. These plants can grow up to 50 centimeters tall.
  • Carmona retusa: many stores sell Carmona retusa plants as well. They are high maintenance and need temperatures above 12º C throughout the entire year (they can’t survive cold temperatures). You can make sure it stays hydrated by placing it on top of a plate full of water.

These two plants pair nicely with an avocado tree, which is easy to grow! You can obtain a pit from any supermarket avocado and germinate it.

Decorating your home with bonsai trees, alternative decor

Decorating with bonsai trees is a decor idea that breaks the mold. Most people think of the typical flowerpot when they think of houseplants. But a bonsai tree is so much more than that.

Just make sure to monitor the temperature, watering and sunlight. By controlling these three aspects, you can ensure a healthy, leafy bonsai tree. Without proper care, bonsai trees can suffer enormously and lose their charm.

Remember that decorating with plants is a sure sign that depicts a true appreciation of nature. —
