Sequins are small, shiny disk-shaped beads. They’re usually made of plastic in come in all different colors, shapes and sizes. While they are usually circular in shape, you can also find star, butterfly and square-shaped designs.

Nowadays, they’re not just used for decorating Christmas ornaments, clothes, trinkets or party decorations. From cushions to containers, you can now use them to decorate all sorts of items for your home.

In other words, sequins are no longer merely synonymous with party decorations; these versatile objects can bring a touch of sparkle to any room. But this doesn’t mean they have lost any of their festive feel.

The following craft projects are really simple to do. They don’t require many additional materials, and are great for making beautiful decorations for your home.

1. Sparkling sequin photo frames

Instead of using buttons or glitter, you can decorate your photo frames with nothing more than superglue and sequins. You can choose whichever size you want, as long as you have enough to cover the entire frame.

If your photo frame is metallic in color (gold, silver, bronze) we recommend choosing sequins of the same color. That way, even if you don’t cover the entire surface, your frame will still look great.

When it comes to gluing on your sequins, it’s a good idea to work section by section. Remember, you don’t need to start off by covering the entire frame in glue. This will simply force you to rush to stick them all on before the glue dries, which could spoil the final result.

The bigger the sequins, the easier they are to handle. However, there are tools which make it easier to work with small sequins.

2. Sequin candle holders

To make some beautiful candle holders, you’ll need to buy sequins of the same color, but all different sizes. You can decorate the lower half of the candle holder with the larger sequins, and gradually use smaller and smaller ones as you work your way up towards the top.

It’s important to remember that you don’t need to arrange them in straight lines. For example, you could arrange them in a wave pattern. Then, gradually reduce the number of sequins the higher up you get, so that they look a bit like bubbles at the top of a glass of soda.

If you want a really original design, you could also use some different shapes. For example, you could use star-shaped sequins. Alternatively, if you want to decorate the candle itself rather than the candle holder, we would recommend decorating around the center of the candle, as far away from the flame as possible.

3. Sequined bunting

Decorate bunting with sequins.

If you like decorating your rooms with bunting, you’ll love this idea for creating sequined bunting. There are two ways to do this. Firstly, you could make your bunting out of fabric, or you could go for the simpler option of using card.

If you decide to make your bunting out of fabric, you can simply sew on your sequins with a sewing machine. So that it doesn’t look too over the top, you could alternate, decorating some pieces of fabric while leaving the others plain. Remember, for best results, it’s better to choose sequins that match the color of the fabric.

If sewing isn’t really your thing, you could make bunting out of card or cardboard, decorate it with spray paint and stick the sequins on with glue. Then, thread some ribbon through the holes in the bunting and use it to decorate your home.

But where is the best place to decorate with bunting? While you could use your bunting to decorate your bedroom, you could also use it in your work or home office space. You might want to make shorter pieces of bunting so it doesn’t look too excessive.

4. Sequined cushions

Reversible sequins create interesting textures on cushions.

One of the simplest and best ways to incorporate sequins into your decor is to use cushions. You could have cushions entirely covered in sequins, or use them to create patterns or words.

When it comes to making your own sequined cushions, it’s best to use a sewing machine, as glue is far less secure. We would also recommend using reversible sequins, as they create really interesting textures.

Sequins – other options

If these aren’t the decorative elements you’re looking for, try to find other options. Let your creative juices flow, and don’t be afraid to experiment and try out new ideas. Remember, sequins are a great way to give old objects a new lease of life, or brighten up plainer items.

For example, you could take some dried branches, paint them with metallic gold spray paint, and decorate the length of the branch with sequins. This is a great way to add a beautiful twist to any vase or demi-john.
