You don’t have to have a big backyard to enjoy flowers and plants at home. Any spot that that’s clear and receives sunlight will be all you need. In today’s post, we’re going to explain how to decorate your balcony with hanging baskets to make the most of your space and to enjoy the colors and fragrance of flowers.
Pointers on decorating with hanging baskets
Hanging baskets are perfect for tight spaces and they work for both exterior and interior areas. They add nature, along with color and fragrance, to our settings without taking up any floor space.
By making the most of your walls, you can free up space for a set of table and chairs. Sit back and enjoy fresh air and sunlight without leaving home.
The only downside of these kinds of flower pots is that you’ll have to be careful about what’s underneath them because they drip after watering. On the bright side, they tend to be very small so you won’t need to reserve too much dripping space.
Some plant species, mainly hanging varieties like ferns or devil’s vine, really thrive in hanging pots. We also recommend geraniums, petunias or begonias. They won’t require too much space to grow and will look perfect.
Depending on the size of your flower basket, you can also mix different kinds of hanging plants together. By putting them together, you could optimize your space even more and really fill your balcony with colors, fragrance, and balance. Look for the walls that receive the most sunlight but make sure it’s not excessive or your plants will wilt.
To prepare your hanging basket, you’ll need potting soil and substrate. Fill the pot around three-quarters full. Using a stick or your own hand, make a small hole in the center and set your plant in. Pat it in with soil and press down lightly to make sure it’s firmly planted. Give it plenty of water, filling it almost to the top.
Plants in hanging pots have to grow their roots in a limited space. Consequently, it’s normal that they need frequent fertilizing and watering.
Types of hanging baskets for your balcony
Gardening stores offer a wide variety of hanging baskets. So, try to look past the aesthetics when you’re browsing options. For example, remember that some plants can’t grow in hanging pots because they lack depth.
More often than not, hanging pots are made with plastic because it’s a light and resistant material. They’re hung from a hook or special structure that also could be plastic. However, we recommend a stronger material to ensure that they don’t fall from the weight of the soil, plant, and water.
Hands down, wooden or ceramic pots are the most beautiful options. They’re pricier, but they look absolutely gorgeous on balconies. If you go with a wooden pot, make sure that it’s treated to withstand weather conditions (sunlight, rain, heat, cold, etc.).
We don’t recommend using metal pots for home exteriors in sunny areas because roots might burn as plants dry out. You can use them, however, to hold an inner-pot that keeps your plant safe.
Novel materials
Recently, we’re finding hanging baskets that are made of other, more natural materials as well. For example, rope and a lovely macrame design or a nest-like metal structure covered in dried plants.
You can also bring out your crafty side and recycle any containers that you have at home: glass jars, plastic containers, wooden boxes, etc. Look for a wall to hang the pots and don’t go overboard with the plants. Even though a full pot looks pretty, it’ll seem suffocating or crammed.
