Your Child's Bathroom: How to Decorate it and Make it Safe

Last update: 16 September, 2021

Your child’s bathroom should be safe and decorated accordingly. In this way, it’ll also be easier to instill good hygiene habits in your little one.

Ideally, everything they need should be at their fingertips, as this also teaches children to be independent and responsible for activities such as brushing their own teeth. This is the reason why we’re going to explain how to decorate your child’s bathroom and how to make it safe.

Tips for decorating your child’s bathroom

The decoration must be according to the age of the little ones.

The decor in a child’s bathroom is very important as it ensures that each time children enter this space, they’ll have a fun experience. Some of the tips that you can implement are:

  • Color: paint the walls in bright and pleasant colors such as yellow, blue, green, or pink.
  • Details: choose one or more walls to contrast. You can use wallpaper with flowers, animals, cartoons, stars or whatever your children prefer. Don’t rule out painting a wall with chalk paint so that children can write, draw or keep track of their growth.
  • Play: for children, play is present in everything, and their bathroom shouldn’t be an exception. Include a number or letter mat and allow your children to play with tiles or legos.
  • Accessories: if you have a bathtub, place a tray on it to hold soap. This can be in the shape of an animal, and you can add a couple of trolleys containing your children’s favorite toys. Replace traditional towels with ones with animal ears or embroidery and change traditional shampoo containers for ones with children’s figures.
  • Everything at their height: if the bathroom has been designed for children from the beginning, it’s likely that the sink and toilet are at their height. If not, put some ladders, steps (or a potty) if your children are still very young.

How to make your child’s bathroom safe?

Give your children security.

The second part of our article focuses on children’s safety in the bathroom. You could have the most beautifully decorated bathroom, but if it’s not safe, neither you nor your children will be at ease.

Remember, although your adjustments will make the bathroom a safe place, children should never be left alone, they always require parental supervision. We’ll tell you how to make this room a safe space:

  • Set up a booster, steps, or a ladder to ensure that your children can reach the sink, toilet, and bathtub. Otherwise, they could try to reach those accessories and fall or slide.
  • Install some grab bars in the bathtub or shower.
  • Put the towel rack and mirror at their height so that they can develop habits of independence in complete safety.
  • Replace the hygiene products that come in glass containers, as they should always be plastic. This avoids accidents.
  • Keep sharp objects such as scissors, nail clippers, or razors away from your child’s bathroom. Children should never handle these items unsupervised and therefore they should be kept in a safe place with limited access.
  • Use a floating thermometer to check that the water temperature is suitable for children.

  • Cover the faucet with inflatable protectors. This way you’ll avoid accidents if children touch or bang into them.
  • Use non-slip mats and keep the floor dry, thus reducing the chances of slipping.
  • Lock the drawers or bathroom cabinets to prevent children from accessing what’s inside.

Make this room a safe and beautiful place

Without a doubt, your child will really enjoy having a bathroom that’s beautifully decorated, suitable and safe for them to use. This will allow your child to grow up with independence and autonomy, and make it easier for them to practice good hygiene. They can also learn how to keep their space clean, organized and care for their own accessories and belongings.
