Plants are natural elements which can really bring a space to life, adding color and decoration to our homes. There’s an infinite variety of houseplants which, regardless of the time of year, will always look great, with only the most basic care.

There are some plants which – thanks to their natural properties and habitat – can pretty much take care of themselves. These plants are able to adapt to all different climates and manage to grow naturally and healthily almost anywhere. They can be from the desert or humid climates; solitary plants or plants which grow side-by-side with other species. They can be green, leafy, flowering or non flowering, short or tall – they come in all different shapes and sizes.

If you love having houseplants but you don’t have either the time or the knowledge necessary to look after them, here you’ll find some plants which you can use to decorate your home. With only a minimal amount of care, you can be sure that they’ll be around for a long-time.

Hardy houseplants for your home

Cacti

The cactus is a great houseplant for decorating. Elegant and beautiful, today they are commonly used for decorating the most important rooms of the house. There are many different shapes, sizes, textures and colors, and they don’t really need any special care or attention.

Adding a houseplant to your bedroom is a great finishing touch to the decor.

Naturally found in arid climates with low humidity and high temperatures, they can survive extreme heat, and don’t require much water. This means you won’t need to water them often, as the soil they naturally grow in is always dry. You should place your cacti near the windows where they can absorb as much light and fresh air as possible.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is a very well-known and popular houseplant and is famous for its ability to sooth and heal skin. This beautiful plant has large, fleshy leaves, and is ideal for decorating both inside and outside your home. You should water it only occasionally and make sure it gets plenty of light. Your plant will thank you for it, and will stay healthy and grow more quickly.

Ficus tree

Ficus trees are noble, hardy houseplants that can withstand almost any temperature. They are small, leafy trees which need very little care. Ideally, you should only water them when the soil is completely dry. If you over-water them, they will drown and die. They are ideal if you don’t have a lot of time to look after your plants, or if you’re someone who often forgets to water them.

Golden Pothos

Pothos plants are best suited to growing indoors. They have very green leaves and long stems. Plus, they only need occasional watering, and very little light. If you like to have a lot of greenery in your house, golden pothos is the perfect houseplant for decorating and adding a bit of color to your home.

Maidenhair fern

Maidenhair is a small, leafy fern with very small, green leaves. Like all ferns, it needs a humid climate, so you’ll need to spray its leaves and water it regularly.

Remember: never drown your houseplants – they won’t survive large amounts of water. If they do need a lot of water, it’s best to give them a medium amount frequently so that they can absorb it properly. If you want, you can place your fern in the bathroom, or another humid place in your house.

These, and many other plants, are best-suited to living inside, and will last the longest. If you want to, you can put them outside on a balcony or terrace where they will still have some protection from the elements. They adapt easily to their surroundings, so you’ll be able to enjoy watching them grow.

Choose some nice pots for your favorite houseplants.

Pots are like your plants’ homes. Every day they will grow and develop inside their plant pots. It’s therefore fundamental that you choose a pot that suits the size and type of plant. You could also decorate your plant pots, playing around with the colors and giving them a unique design.

You can either recycle objects, decorate them and use them as plant pots, or buy some beautifully colored pots of different shapes and sizes. They will help to decorate your home and add a bit of life and color to those forgotten corners of your house. Plus, looking after them is a really pleasant past-time. It can help you to clear your head and forget your problems. Plus you´re giving your plants some TLC at the same time. Seeing your houseplants grow thanks to your care and attention is really satisfying.
