Open-plan loft apartments are becoming increasingly common in cities all over the world. From a decorative point of view, they allow us to create interiors that maintain a balance between space and furnishings. In this article, we’ll give you 3 top tips to help you make the most of your loft.

Throughout history, traditional homes have generally tried to squeeze as many rooms as possible into a limited amount of space. Today, there are other, more innovative and minimalist options out there, that seek to create a cleaner, purer aesthetic.

For this reason, lofts have been slowly gaining in popularity, particularly in urban areas. Offering several important advantages, and more and more families are choosing to live in these types of apartments, where the rooms are bigger, and the decor can be adapted to modern needs.

1. Make the most of your loft – aesthetic union

One of the main reasons lofts stand out is because of their ability to unite different spaces. For example, they might have an open-plan living room and kitchen. In some lofts, there may even be one space for the kitchen, living room and bedroom, forming a direct link between each one.

This kind of layout originally emerged in the US. The internal organization of these lofts isn’t random; instead, the designer tries to arrange everything so that each “room” still has a specific place, without losing that sense of aesthetic and organizational coherence.

To combine the rooms properly, it’s important to give greater prominence to the living room. This should be located in the center of the loft, with the sofa serving as the star feature. The kitchen area plays a secondary role, with very different furniture to that found in the rest of the space.

If the bedroom also forms part of the open-plan layout, it must be kept separate from everything else, without it being isolated. To do this, you must create a link between it and the rest of the space, to make it more welcoming.

Harmony between all the different decorative elements in your loft will help to create a sense of aesthetic uniformity.

2. Two apartments, one space

Lofts are wide, open apartments. This gives you more space to work with, allowing you to spread the furniture out far more than usual. If your loft is split over two floors, there are several ways you can make the most of it.

  • Just because you have a second floor, doesn’t mean you have to close it off with a solid wall. By leaving it open and visible, you can help to unite the space.
  • If you don’t want it to be completely open, you could have windows instead of a wall. That way, the two spaces won’t be separated from one another. At the same time, they will give you greater privacy, blocking out some of the noise from the kitchen and living room.

The stairs leading up to the second floor should be installed next to the wall, rather than in the center of the room. It’s best to avoid creating obstacles, to preserve that sense of spaciousness.

You can also play around with structural and architectural features to create a more interesting aesthetic. For example, the beams could be left visible. As lofts are closely associated with the industrial style, this can be an effective look.

3. Choosing the right furniture

Our third and final top tip to help you make the most of your loft is to take the time to furnish it properly. The furniture can’t be chosen at random. It needs to be carefully planned out, and you can’t underestimate the importance of creating the perfect layout.

As we mentioned earlier, the sofa should sit at the center of your loft. Ideally, we recommend choosing a chaise longue sofa. This helps to immediately create a feeling of comfort and relaxation. Wall-mounted TVs work best in these open spaces, so it’s important to orientate your living room so that it’s facing the wall. You can then place a table directly in front of the sofa, along with a couple of armchairs.

Next, we want to take a closer look at the arrangement of the kitchen and dining room. In many cases, you can use the sofa as a divider between the living room and kitchen areas, so that you sit with your back to the kitchen. To create a sense of contrast between the spaces, we would recommend choosing furniture with a slightly different color and style in each different area, without creating too great a contrast.

Finally, we should give a special mention to the bedroom. The bed is the main component, and should generally be fairly large. It can then be complemented with a bedside table to create a sense of balance.
