You can create your own cupboard to optimize the organization of your kitchen. Another advantage of making your own cupboard is that you can create the compartments exactly how you want them. So today, we’d like to show you how to make your own cupboard. In addition, we’ll explain the items that you can recycle for your project to save some money.

Make your own cupboard

To make your own cupboard, you first need to measure out your kitchen space. After measuring, you can determine the size and shape you want. You should also think about what features you want it to have. So, consider if you need to add shelves, drawers, doors or other elements. Below, we’ll show you one of the many options for creating a kitchen storage unit.

Materials

To create your own cupboard, you can restore an old cabinet or something similar and transform it. If not, we’ll show you how to make one from scratch. It can be open or it can feature a door, it’s up to you. You’ll need the following materials:

  • Wooden or wicker drawers (your preference)
  • Wooden boards
  • Iron rods
  • Hinges
  • Doors and drawers, previously measured (your preference)
  • Drill
  • Screws
  • Wheels (your preference)
  • Paint and varnish (your preference)
  • Drawer knobs
  • Door fittings

These materials will vary according to what you want. It’ll mainly depend on if you want an open cupboard or not as well as the materials you want to use.

We recommend using wood and steel to make a beautiful cupboard. Using these materials together is very popular these days. Additionally, they’d go great with homes that have a classical, rustic or modern style.

1. Set up the structure

First, prepare the steel structure of your cupboard. Once you have the final measurements and right sizes for the steel rods, connect them. Set up the vertical and horizontal structure to fit however many shelves you want to put in later. Now, you’ll have the basic, sturdy structure for your cupboard. You should also think about leaving a larger area of space in the top part of the cupboard. It’ll be handy for storing dishes and everyday objects. Then, distribute the compartments for the drawers, keeping the distance between them equal.

2. Add the shelves

Now, add wooden shelves on top of the steel rods. If you like, you can paint and varnish them. If you choose to paint them, you’ll need to have them already painted and ready before you add them to your cupboard. Choose a sturdy wood that’ll meet your storage needs.

3. Open shelving or closed shelving

Once you’ve set up the structure and shelves, you can go ahead and decide if you want to make a doorless cupboard or not. These days, open cupboards are trendy. Using an open cupboard will show off the beautiful structure itself.

Open shelving

If you’ve decided to make an open cupboard, just add some drawers to each of the shelves. You can use wooden or wicker shelves. They’ll give your new piece some originality while providing smaller compartments to store whatever items you please.

Closed shelving

If you’d rather have a cupboard with a door, first close off your cupboard’s sides with wooden boards that you’ve already measured. You’ll also need to measure the drawers and other pieces. Use the hinges to attach the doors to the main structure. Next, you can attach your choice of beautiful handles that match your kitchen.

4- Paint and decorate to your heart’s content

Once you’ve finished attaching everything that your cupboard needs, you can start decorating it. You can paint it in your favorite colors. Try to match the colors and overall look with your kitchen. By doing so, you’ll create a beautiful, unified visual effect. Try an aged finish in the color of your choice to give it a vintage, faded look.

5. Add wheels, if you’d like

Lastly, if you want, you can add 4 wheels to the bottom of your cupboard. With wheels, you could move it around your kitchen.

So, following our steps, you could have a beautiful cupboard that has been furnished by your own hands with the dimensions and materials that you want. You could store your kitchen tools and food products in an organized fashion. Try giving another life to your old furniture and creating a DIY piece with all of the convenience that you need.
