4 Home Solar Energy Tips
Last update: 08 June, 2019

Renewable energy is a great way to help the environment while reducing home costs. But we don’t always know how to make the most out of it. In light of that, we want to share some home solar energy tips with you today.

Storing solar energy at home: the future is now

Some figure

More and more families are installing solar panels on their home roofs. People are starting to realize that solar panels don’t just create renewable and limitless energy, but they also cut down electricity bills substantially.

Solar panels obviously need an initial investment, but they pay for themselves by reducing electricity bills.

You don’t have to be a millionaire or live in the countryside to enjoy solar energy. Add these panels onto your home and you won’t need to depend on grid-power.

But it isn’t a matter of simply installing panels everywhere as certain laws prohibit solar energy (as well as other alternative forms) or they oblige users to pay additional fees. So first and foremost, find out about your city’s regulations.

How does solar energy work?

Photovoltaic solar panels harness the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity, making it possible to use appliances or lights in the home.

They also use electric batteries. These batteries use special cells to accumulate energy, later transforming it into the same kind of electricity that comes from the grid.

The batteries contain energy and recharge through the solar panels, that might be installed on the roof. Without them, you would only be able to utilize the energy in the very moment, during the day and only if the sun were shining. In that case, rainy or cloudy days would mean no electricity.

Tips for home solar energy

If you’re considering solar panels and their benefits, check out our following tips for storing energy at home:

1. Find the right place to install your panel

Consult an expert to find the best angle for your panels. This will ensure that your panels work all-year-long.

Your panels need to receive at least five hours of sunlight a day. On cloudy days, your panels should at least be able to make the most of the moments of sun. Roofs are the best place to install panels.

2. Look for high-quality batteries

Most people buy a complete kit (panel and battery) but you can also opt to make a bigger investment and purchase batteries with a larger capacity or of a higher quality. TESLA batteries, for example, are some of the best options on the market.

The size you’ll need will depend on various factors. For example, consider how big your house is, the number of electric appliances you have, how many people are in your household and their energy needs, how much time they spend at home, etc. A three-bedroom house with an average-sized family (3-4 members) usually requires 15 kW per day.

3. Inform yourself about local regulations

Sure, we should be free to install solar panels and store energy at home but some countries or cities prohibit it. Avoid running into problems (and wasting money on a big investment) and inform yourself about local laws.

The local law might allow smaller panels, encouraging citizens to combine solar and conventional energy. Or, you might be able to apply for a special permit and meet certain obligations before installation.

4. Don’t waste energy

Whether you’re using solar or traditional energy, minimize your daily use. That means turn off the lights when you’re not in a room, unplug your appliances after use, install automatic outdoor lights and use LED lightbulbs throughout your home.

Storing solar energy at home is quite simple. It calls for an initial investment but will bring you plenty of benefits from day one.
